Term Effective:
Fall 2004
The requirements for this program of study are effective beginning the
semester shown above. If you began working on this program before the
effective semester, you may not be affected by the changes. Consult with the
program contact person or the department chair to determine your eligibility to
complete the program under previous requirements.
Associate Degree Requirements:
The major is one of several requirements students need to
fulfill in order to be awarded the Associate Degree, the highest level of
academic achievement recognized by Santa Rosa Junior College. Please note that all
of the following requirements must be met in order for the degree to be
conferred:
Description:
The Nursing Program has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, and prepares the student for entry into the practice of professional registered nursing. Students receive clinical experiences in a variety of clinical facilities and community agencies throughout Sonoma County.
The successful completion of this major entitles the student to an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing, and eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN, the professional licensing examination to become a registered nurse.
It is strongly advised that all applicants attend a Counseling Pre-nursing Information Meeting and consult with a health sciences counselor prior to beginning the program prerequisites. The evaluation worksheet is an advising tool only. Program requirements are subject to change and students are strongly advised to consult with the nursing department regarding all requirements.
Registered nurses administer nursing care to ill and injured persons. The majority of jobs are in hospitals and clinics, but opportunities are also available in public health, education, and industrial settings. Nurses may also choose a specialty area, e.g. surgical, pediatrics, psychiatric, labor and delivery, emergency room, etc. As the population ages and the nursing workforce nears retirement, there is a significant demand for nurses regionally, and in California.
Licensure Note: The California Board of Registered Nursing may deny licensure to anyone who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor.

It is important that students who are completing an Associate Degree and desire to transfer to a four-year
institution meet with a counselor to plan their lower division coursework. While many majors at SRJC are
intended to align with lower division major preparation required by California public universities,
specific lower-division major requirements vary among individual campuses. See a
counselor,
visit the Transfer Center,
and check Guides For Transfer in Specific Majors,
and ASSIST to review transfer preparation guides for specific schools and majors.
Program Selection Process:
The selection process is in compliance with Title 5 of the California Education Code. Screening is based on a probability of student succeeding in an ADN program. The score is determined by a formula using the following four criteria:
- Overall college GPA
- Overall English GPA (ENGL 1A or ENGL 100, or ESL 100)
- Overall GPA in the following prerequisite sciences (anatomy, physiology, microbiology)
- Minus the number of repeats, withdraws, no credits, and incomplete grades in the core sciences (negative predictor of success)
The formula will determine a probability of success score for each student. All students who have this score or higher will be eligible for the program. If there are more students than seats in the program, a random computerized selection process (lottery) will be used to select the individuals entering the program from applicants who met the minimum cut score, along with an alternate list. The alternate list is not kept from year to year. Students not accepted must reapply each year.
Senate bill 1309 legislates that ADN programs are to implement assessment testing of students prior to the student being allowed to start ADN coursework. Beginning Spring 2008, all students who are accepted into the SRJC ADN program will be required to successfully pass an assessment test. Those students who pass the test may enroll in ADN coursework. Those students who do not pass are required to take remedial coursework and successfully complete assessment testing before being allowed to enter the ADN program.
